Taiwanese fables design house MediaTek and IBM recently announced they have signed a cooperation agreement, whereby the two companies will jointly develop ultra-fast IEEE 802.15.13c-compatible chipsets. The cooperation is expected to leverage IBM's mmWave (millimeter-Wave) radio technology and MediaTek's broadband chip technology.

According to EE Times, the new chipset, to be used in the WPAN (Wireless Personal Area Network) environment, enables application products to transmit large volumes of information, such as full-length HD (High-Definition) movies, virtually anywhere at home.

The wireless solution is reported to facilitate a data transmission speed 100 times faster than the existing Wi-Fi standards and dispense with the inconvenience of wires that connect different parts of the house, such as the living room and the office. The product can be applied in various multimedia wireless devices, including HDTV, STBs (Set-Top Boxes), DVD (Digital Versatile Disc) players, and PCs, according to Nikkei Electronics Asia.
